Japan market entry for overseas product brands
Launch your product in Japan with the right first route.
Whether you are funded on Kickstarter or Indiegogo, preparing your first campaign, or exploring Japan as your starting market, KETCHUPs helps you choose the right path: Japanese crowdfunding, Amazon Japan, e-commerce, retail, or a staged mix of channels.
Free 7-page market briefing, or a $29 review of your specific product within 48 hours. Send a product or campaign link and we review category fit, compliance flags, possible entry routes, and the channel sequence that fits your product.
For US product brands
Your Japan launch should look like a channel decision, not a gamble.
For teams coming from Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Shopify, Amazon, or retail conversations, the question is not simply “Can we launch in Japan?” The better question is which first route gives your product the strongest proof with the least wasted spend.
We compare the route before building the page.
Crowdfunding, Amazon Japan, e-commerce, retail validation, distributor talks, and staged launch plans are reviewed against category fit, margin, inventory, compliance, and the proof you already have.
Entry route options
Not every Japan launch should start the same way.
Crowdfunding-led launch
Best when your product has a strong story, premium positioning, limited initial inventory, or clear novelty for Japanese early adopters.
Amazon / e-commerce-led launch
Best when demand already exists, the product is searchable, margins support ads, and logistics or repeat purchase matters more than campaign storytelling.
Retail / partner validation
Best when trust, distributor fit, store context, demo needs, or category gatekeepers matter before scaling online.
The process
We start by choosing the route, not by forcing one.
Assess product-market fit
We review category, price, compliance, inventory, proof, and timing for Japan.

Operate the selected route
We handle localization, page or listing setup, application work, ads, PR, customer support, and Japanese communications.

The Japan Crowdfunding Market Briefing is a 7-page PDF covering the five decisions that make or break a Japan launch. No payment and no call — we email you the file.
- The five forks in the road — platform selection, entry route, agency vetting, regulatory check, and post-campaign channels, with what getting each one wrong costs you
- Why the money works differently — Japanese platform fees run 18.7–22% including tax against roughly 5% on Kickstarter, and backers pay a separate fee on top
- What Japanese backers actually buy — and what “agency” really means in a market where running your campaign means holding your exclusive Japan rights
- Makuake vs GREEN FUNDING vs CAMPFIRE — character, scale, success rates, and which ones admit overseas makers directly
- A case study — a US product that raised 3,030% of its goal in Japan with no Kickstarter or Indiegogo history at all
Email only. We do not book a call off it, and we do not add you to a newsletter unless you ask.

Questions brands ask us
FAQ
Does my product need to be funded on Kickstarter or Indiegogo?
No. Funded campaigns are a strong fit because they already have proof, but we also review products preparing their first campaign, products already selling online, and brands considering Japan as an early market.
Do you always recommend crowdfunding first?
No. Crowdfunding can be powerful in Japan, but the right first route depends on the product. Some products should start with Amazon Japan, direct e-commerce, retail validation, or partner conversations.
How do you charge?
The 48-Hour Launch Review is $29 right now as part of our launch special — introductory pricing for our launch period. The regular price will be $58 once the launch window closes. If we move forward together, the Japan launch itself is usually structured around the product, scope, and channel plan, often with incentives aligned to launch results.
What happens to my IP and my Japan distribution rights?
Your IP, brand, and product ownership always remain yours — that is never on the table.
Japan distribution is a separate question, and the requirement does not come from us. Japanese crowdfunding platforms require that when an overseas product is listed by an import agent rather than by the manufacturer, that agent already holds an exclusive distribution agreement for the Japanese market. Makuake asks for a copy of the signed agreement during review, and treats listing an overseas product without one as improper distribution. The exclusivity runs through completion of reward delivery.
So if we run your campaign as your Japan agent, an exclusive Japan arrangement is a condition of being accepted onto the platform at all — not a fee we are charging you. Its scope, its term, and what happens to the channel after the campaign are agreed in writing before any work begins, and your other markets are never affected.
Who handles inventory and shipping?
It depends on the route. We coordinate the Japan-side logistics and fulfillment plan, including Japanese-language customer support when needed.
How long does it take?
It depends on the route, category, and compliance requirements, but a typical path runs a few months from first review to launch. You’ll get a concrete timeline as part of your review.
